How does a mobile computer differ from a plain barcode scanner?
A plain scanner must stay attached to a computer and simply feeds it the digits it reads. A mobile computer has its own operating system and application, works on its own as you walk the warehouse, shows the task list on screen, and holds data even when the signal drops.
Does it work without Wi-Fi?
Yes, provided the application supports offline mode — the device stores transactions and syncs when it returns to coverage. Our WMS works this way, and we map dead zones during the site survey.
How rugged does it need to be for warehouse work?
Look at two figures: the IP rating for dust and water, and the drop height it survives. In a warehouse, drops from the hand or a forklift are routine, so pick a device that states both — not a consumer phone in a case.
